Appointment of Vice Principal
Westcott House is delighted to announce the appointment of the Reverend Dr Matt Bullimore as Vice Principal to succeed the Reverend Dr Will Lamb, who becomes Vicar of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford in May.
Matt is the vicar of the parishes of St John the Baptist, Royston and St Peter, Felkirk in the diocese of Leeds. The parishes serve four villages on the Barnsley coalfield, straddling the boundary of South and West Yorkshire. He was brought up a few miles away in Dewsbury where his parents were both lay readers at the churches he attended growing up (his mother was ordained in 1996).
Matt studied theology at the University of Cambridge before receiving a scholarship from Emmanuel College to spend a year at Harvard University, working mainly in the Divinity School. He subsequently did his MPhil at the University of Manchester before preparing for ordination at Westcott House. Whilst there he completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Catherine Pickstock. He served his title in the parishes of All Saints, Roberttown and St Peter, Hartshead in West Yorkshire before becoming chaplain to the Bishop of Wakefield. During his time as chaplain he began teaching Christian doctrine for St Hild College (previously the Yorkshire Ministry Course). He was also a bishop’s adviser on theology and society and the diocesan international officer. Later, whilst an incumbent, he was also the lead co-ordinator of the Wakefield Diocesan Fellowship of Vocation.
Matt is the Assistant Editor for Crucible: The Journal of Christian Social Ethics. He is a member of the Littlemore Group and has a chapter in their recent collection For God’s Sake: Re-Imagining Priesthood and Prayer in a Changing Church. In 2016 he edited Graced Life: The Writings of John Hughes, the collected essays of the late Dean of Jesus College, Cambridge with whom he had trained at Westcott. Matt is married to Clare, a pianist, and they have three young children and a Springer Spaniel.
Bishop Tony Robinson, the Bishop of Wakefield, said of the news "I am delighted to hear that Matt has been appointed Vice Principal at Westcott House. I have known him for the past twelve years. He is a very gifted priest, who is well loved by his parishioners who will miss his leadership, but will now help to train future clergy for their ministries. I will pray for him, Clare and their children as they prepare to move to Cambridge."
Commenting on this appointment, the Reverend Canon Chris Chivers, Principal, said: "Matt Bullimore brings huge gifts to this post and wide-ranging experience as an incumbent, theological educator and bishop's chaplain. His combination of intellectual and pastoral abilities, kindness and humour, together with his sense of the parish as the key context for mission will model for future clergy exactly what is needed. I very much look forward to working with him at Westcott for the flourishing of the whole church."
