Chaplain
The Role of the Chaplain at Westcott House
The Chaplain has three main roles within Westcott's life: to be there for all in the House's community, to help the House to worship and to help the House to pray.
Being there for the Westcott community
While at Westcott, much of students' thinking and reflection on God's call to them takes place alongside their personal tutors. However, there can be times when it's good to meet and talk with someone who stands outside the College's structures of assessment and feedback. That's what the Chaplain is here for. She is around for anyone who needs to talk about anything in confidence.
Helping Westcott worship
Along with the Principal and the Tutor in Liturgy, the Chaplain has oversight of what happens in chapel and aims to enable everyone in the Westcott community to give worship that is glorifying to God and to appreciate that worship means much more than just the exercise of our own personal taste.
Helping Westcott pray
One of the most important things students grow in during their time at the House is a strong prayer life that enables their Christian ministry in the church and in the world to be resourced and sustained. Time at Westcott is an opportunity to make daily prayer part of life's rhythm and also to learn more about the host of ways of praying that can help each person's walk with God. During the year the Chaplain runs a number of sessions that aim to help everyone at Westcott grow in their life of prayer. The Chaplain also helps ordinands to find a "spiritual director" who can accompany them through this process. |
