Common Room
All members of the House and their spouses belong to the Common Room, which supplies newspapers, coffee and tea and a lively, cheap and well-attended bar. The Common Room runs its own budget from modest subscriptions. This budget supports costs such as newspapers and magazines, refreshments for guests, social events, maintenance and refurbishment and from time to time good causes.
The community gathers every Thursday evening during term, after Community Eucharist, for notices and meetings (often with visiting speakers). Tutor Groups take it in turns to provide soup or a simple meal, and the money saved from the catering budget is given to the Missions Committee of the Common Room to support mission activities (in a wide sense) at local, national and international level. Recent grants have been to Jimmy's Night Shelter (for the homeless in Cambridge) and the Delhi Brotherhood, with which Westcott has a long association.
Missions Committee
The Missions Committee encourages students to be involved in mission in its widest sense. This has included parish missions in the vacation, speakers and debates on ethical issues, the Westcott walkabout in Cambridge (wearing "Trainee vicar" T-shirts!), campaigning on justice issues, volunteering for student community action, making donations to local, national and international charities and supporting mission activities across the life of the House. Through these initiatives, we hope to be faithful to God's calling to us as a community and to provide experiences and resources that will enable us to engage effectively with God's mission in our future ministry.
Eco Group
The Eco Group at Westcott has been established for the last two years, reflecting a growing environmental awareness among students and in the Church of England as a whole. It seeks to promote environmental responsibility within Westcott and the wider Cambridge Theological Federation. In doing so it has worked with staff and students to improve all aspects of recycling and energy conservation, highlighted the latest news concerning environment and development issues and sought to promote environmental mission in the Church.
