PhD (Cambridge University)

The PhD is a research degree taught within the Cambridge University Faculty of Divinity. Students will work with a supervisor to produce a thesis of up to 80,000 words. The degree is normally taken full-time over three years, but is also available part-time.

For ordinands the PhD is a four year programme, with your first and final years spent living in Westcott, and your second and third year based at one of the Cambridge colleges. The aim is to compete the PhD in three years, then to spend your fourth and final year with a much more heavily pastoral focus, including a contextual theology placement.

The PhD is suitable for ordinands who wish to undertake a substantial piece of theological research. It requires a good 2.1 in the student's first degree and ideally Master's degree as well. The student's diocese and Westcott will need to make a case to Ministry Division that they are a "potential theological educator" in order for permission (and funding) to be granted. Some of the Cambridge colleges also have special funds which will support ordinands through postgraduate research.
