Fresh Expressions

Flowers in Westcott's garden

We believe that a critical engagement with the insights and experience of "Fresh Expressions" and "Mission Shaped Church" is essential whatever ministry ordinands go on to undertake - we are all "pioneer ministers". At Westcott all students have the opportunity to work with the Pioneer Ministry Tutor.

We also provide specific training routes for those who are designated as training for ordained pioneer ministry.

Fresh Expressions is included in the "Life and Service" course. We also offer fortnightly seminars and optional placements and courses. We also bring in practitioners from the national scene to keep us in touch with their experiences and new developments.

Fresh Expressions at Westcott House

For those students seeking training for ordained pioneer ministry – to be able to create and lead something new - we offer either residential training or the possibility of "mixed mode" training which enables students to work up to half time in a fresh expression setting whilst training for ordination. The course offers specific training both in priesthood and emerging forms of church while making available all the academic resources of Cambridge. Part of this course is taught jointly with Ridley Hall in Cambridge.

These courses are run by the Pioneer Ministry Tutor, The Revd David Male, who has helped many new fresh expressions get going throughout the country and has many years of pioneering a "fresh expression" himself. He is also an Associate Missioner of "Fresh Expressions", the national initiative of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.
