Tutorial Relationship

A tutorial being held at Westcott

Each ordinand at Westcott is allocated to one of our six tutor groups. The tutor is the student's first point of contact in college, and is responsible for guiding and sustaining students through the process of formation. Tutors act as a kind of "coach", helping to set goals for training, to monitor the student's development, and to provide encouragement along the way.

Students have focused individual tutorials twice a term both to review progress and to provide a point of integration between theology, practice, and experience. Once a term there is a group tutorial, where three or four ordinands can share experiences and reflect together theologically. Each of these individual and group tutorials has a set theme to ensure that all aspects of the process of formation are attended to in this context over the course of each year.

The tutor group is much more than just a set of individual relationships with the tutor. Each group meets every Wednesday morning for informal prayers and breakfast together, and each group is responsible for worship in Chapel for one or two weeks in the term. Planning worship together provides the opportunity to work collaboratively and creatively together. There are also meals and social events scattered through the year, and people often find their tutor group serves as a "home base" within the college.
