Ministry Council Chair
We are delighted to share that Martin Seeley, Bishop of St Edmunsbury and Ipswich and former Principal of Westcott House, has been announced at the next Chair of the Ministry Council of the Church of England. The post is a key one, responsible with the Council for advising the House of Bishops and the dioceses over the work of nurturing vocations to ministry, the selection and formation of candidates for ministry and continuing ministerial development and deployment. Bishop Martin’s long experience at the House will be invaluable to their work, and exemplifies the high regard in which Westcott is held within the Church.
Bishop Martin, who was Principal from 2006 to 2015, said of the appointment “I am honoured to have been asked to chair the Ministry Council at a critical moment in the development of ministry in the Church of England, both lay and ordained. Dioceses and the Church of England as a whole are facing substantial mission and ministry challenges and I look forward to working to build on the best in our traditions of ministry and ministerial formation.” His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Church, with the Renewal and Reform agenda for growing vocations to ministry by 50% a central strand to the vision for the future.
Canon Chris Chivers, Principal of Westcott House, expressed his joy at the news, saying "I am delighted that my distinguished predecessor, Bishop Martin Seeley, has been appointed to chair Ministry Council. He will bring immense experience, wisdom and enthusiasm to this work at a critical stage, as dioceses and TEIs embrace new ways of collaborative working."
Westcott House extends its congratulations to Bishop Martin, and its prayers for the work of the Ministry Council.
