Statement in Response to Recent Social Media
The Revd Canon Chris Chivers, Principal of Westcott House, said: “An evening service took place in the chapel on Tuesday to mark LGBT History Month using a form of liturgy which was not an authorised act of worship in line with the College’s procedures.
I fully recognise that the contents of the service are at variance with the doctrine and teaching of the Church of England and that is hugely regrettable.
Inevitably for some members of the House this caused considerable upset and disquiet and I have spoken at length to those involved in organising the service.
I will be reviewing and tightening the internal mechanisms of the House to ensure this never happens again.
At Westcott we value the opportunity to give space for LGBQT community and we always hope to make a creative contribution to setting a different tone for the debate on human sexuality in the church. But this was not it.
It needs to be recognised that theological colleges are places of experiment and enquiry where people do make mistakes.
There is much to learn from this experience and we will keep enabling members of the house to do this learning.”
